Irresistible Caramelized Onion Dip

Before You Start

Can I make this caramelized onion dip ahead of time? Yes, and it's better for it. Make it at least a day ahead - like a good lasagna, the flavors meld and deepen overnight. Store it covered in the fridge for up to a week. Pull it out 20-30 minutes before serving so the cream cheese softens and the dip loosens up.

How long does it take to caramelize the onions? Plan on 30-45 minutes of low and slow cooking - this is the step you can't rush. The two yellow onions need patience over medium-low heat, stirred every few minutes, until they're deep golden and jammy. A pinch of brown sugar helps, but real color comes from time, not heat.

Why did my caramelized onions burn instead of turning golden? Burning means the heat was too high or the pan too crowded. Keep it at medium-low, use a wide pan so the onions aren't piled up, and stir regularly. If they start sticking or browning too fast, add a splash of water to deglaze and lower the heat.

No ads. No pop-ups. Just the recipe.

One of my favorite things to do is make an assortment of "snackies", grab a nice cocktail, and put on one of my favorite shows/movies with the ones I love. I would do this all the time with my mom when I was a young adult still living at home, and now with my husband in our own home. This tradition shall never cease.

Myself, Dad, and sister Savannah have one guilty snack we love, and it drives my Mom CRAZY! We LOVE French onion dip! Yes, the sour cream and dry packet mix onion dip with ruffly chips! My mom thinks that dip is atrocious. We plea with her every time how good it is... she's. not. buying. You may be thinking the same thing as my Mom, how can you eat that stuff? There are certain things you grow up eating, and they become a memory with every taste leaving you with those warm fuzzy feelings each time you enjoy. My Dad would sometimes make this dip on an afternoon off, and I have fond memories of those days spent with family.

Well, today I am here to share with you the French onion dip that everyone can agree on. This dip is incredible. The secret to the decadence is the sweet caramelized onions. YUM. This dip is worth the wait too. It won't take 30 seconds like the packet dip, but man you will be craving this on a regular basis, and you won't mind the extra work. So, grab your favorite bag of chips, beverage of choice, all your favorite people, and ENJOY!

Cheers!

Instructions

  1. 1Heat a sauté pan with butter and oil. Once butter has melted, throw in all of the sliced onions. Turn heat to medium and continue cooking for 12-15 minutes or until tender and nicely caramelized. Add in brown sugar and allow to melt and cook into onions for 30 seconds more.
  2. 2Remove onions from the pan and place in a bowl. Add cayenne, salt, pepper, garlic powder, cream cheese, sour cream and mayo to the onions. Mix until well incorporated. Adjust seasonings to your liking.
  3. 3Allow dip to chill for a couple hours, and then serve with your favorite chips!

Make it yours

  • Tips for Success
  • Slow Cooking: Ensure you caramelize the onions slowly over medium heat to develop their natural sweetness fully.
  • Room Temperature Cream Cheese: Using room temperature cream cheese helps achieve a smoother dip without lumps.
  • Season to Taste: Adjust the seasonings to your liking. Taste the dip before chilling and add more salt, pepper, or cayenne if needed.
  • Variations
  • Herb Infusion: Add fresh herbs like chives, parsley, or thyme for an extra layer of flavor.
  • Cheese Twist: Mix in some shredded cheddar or Gruyère for a cheesy version of the dip.
  • Bacon Bits: Sprinkle crispy bacon bits into the dip for a smoky, savory touch.
